Rising Need in Our Community
Animal shelters across Canada are facing unprecedented demand. In South Simcoe County, ADHS has seen a dramatic rise in abandoned and surrendered animals since the pandemic.
In the past two years we have experienced:
As the pound for several municipalities, we are also seeing more stray animals. In previous years, 60–75% of stray dogs were reunited with their owners. In 2025 that number dropped to just 30%, meaning many more animals now rely on our shelter for care and adoption.
Despite these challenges, ADHS continues to maintain its no-kill commitment thanks to the generosity of our supporters. Over the past five years our euthanasia rate has remained only 2–3%, and only when recommended by a veterinarian for humane medical reasons.
