Animal Care Coordinator

Description

Reporting to a Director of the Volunteer Board, the animal care coordinator will provide guidance and work direction primarily to the dog team volunteers at the shelter. She/he will oversee and participate in the daily observations and quality care for shelter dogs Also, he/she will assist, train, and manage the adoption programs, volunteer and foster recruitment and inform the Director in charge of any issues. At times the animal care coordinator may be asked to assist in other areas of animal care within the shelter.

Position Schedule

This is a salaried position; 40 hours a week with variable schedules to be negotiated.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide and participate in daily care of dogs; cleaning, feeding, grooming, exercising; monitoring and ensuring  proper husbandry, humane handling, compassionate care, and proper enrichment. 


  • Maintain sanitary conditions.


  • Train/instruct volunteers and ensure shelter policies and procedures are being followed. Assign work as needed. Record, review, and maintain training records.

  

  • Provide effective handling and restraint of animals in a humane and safe manner. 


  • Follow and ensure health and safety protocols are being observed by all volunteers.

 

  • Maintain detailed and complete medical records for each dog, monitoring vaccine and parasite treatment schedules.


  • Maintain and record proper inventory of all shelter dog supplies and equipment. Create lists of supplies needed and follow-up on orders to ensure adequate supplies. Ensure proper maintenance of equipment and report issues to the Director. 


  • Provide and/or coordinate the transport of animals as needed, including on an emergency basis, such as visits to external contracted veterinarian clinics. 


  • Develop and participate in educational programs delivered by the shelter, open house events or animal events on an as needed basis.


  • Network in a professional manner with different organizations, such as other humane societies, and rescue groups to help placement of animals or to resolve other situations as they arise. 


  • Develop various volunteer teams such as adoption teams, teams to assist with screening potential foster applicants, as well as teams to assist with maintaining appropriate records and documentation.


  • Work in a professional, safe, efficient, and respectable manner at all times. 

Assist

A candidate with animal health education may be asked to assist with the following:


  • Ensure proper intake of animals arriving at the shelter. Triage and assess their physical and mental status. Document all important information such as sex, age, breed, markings, health status, etc. on animal records. 


  • Prepare/administer medication as prescribed by a veterinarian, including flea/parasite treatments, subcutaneous and intramuscular injections, vaccines, and treatments. 


  • Perform physical exams, behavioral assessments, identify/record observations and report any concerns to our veterinarians.


  • Prepare, collect, and deliver specimen samples for diagnostics, such as fecal samples, skin scrapings, etc. 

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience working with all breeds of dogs and the ability to work with challenging behaviours and different strengths and sizes of dogs.


  • A sound foundation in basic dog handling and canine behavior.


  • Candidates with animal health and/or behavioural education qualifications are preferred.


  • Ability to develop positive and productive relationship with ADHS volunteers, the community and supporting medical professionals.


  • Ability to multitask, work under pressure and learn multiple areas of the shelter.


  • Demonstrate understanding of the culture of a no-kill shelter and be willing to embrace those values.  


  • Excellent computer skills, and proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and PetPoint use.
